the commander of u.s. forces in afghanistan, the general john allen who took over the job when general petraeus left it to run the c.i.a. now officials say general allen's nomination to become the supreme allied commander in europe is on "hold" while potentially inappropriate e-mails are being checked out, and her name is jill kelley, a friend of the petraeus family and triggered the original f.b.i. investigation that revealed the director was cheating on his wife. she contacted an at she knew, shirtless agent, claiming to have received anonymous threatening e-mails tells her to stay away from general petraeus. it is unclear but the f.b.i. found reason to open an investigation. investigators determined that the e-mails were from general's biographer paula broad wall and she and general petraeus had an fair and neither had done anything criminal but reason that are inexplicable at this moment, there is more after thousands and thousands of e-mails were discovered thousands and thousands of e-mails. and general allen is also married, and he defies there was an affair and denies that there was any
exchanged with general john allen. and who is general john allen? he is the top u.s. commander in afghanistan and he is the man who's nominated to be the supreme leader of nato. as you can imagine that, nomination was put on hold in light of all of these allegations. for the record, general allen denies any inappropriate relationship with kelley and these e-mails are described as flirtatious. so reaction to this unfolding and unbelievable drama is coming in from all sides a senior official close to general allen said of jill kelley, she is a nice bored rich socialite. senator dianne feinstein who heads the select intelligence committee that will investigate this whole petraeus affair finds the whole situation very tawdry. >> it's been like peeling an onion. every day another peel comes off. and you see a whole new dimension to this. >> jennifer: of course, conservative republicans like former u.n. ambassador john bolton are frothing at the mustache to politicize the scandal. oh goodness sakes. >> i think we

it. >> pelley: in the same question, the president was asked about general john allen, commander of the u.s. forces in afghanistan and his nominee to lead nato. but mr. obama was silent on allen. the same f.b.i. investigation uncovered e-mails between allen and a socialite, jill kelly, who hosted functions for central command in tampa, where both petraeus and allen had worked. based on those e-mails, mr. obama placed allen's nomination to nato on hold. bob orr has our story tonight from washington. >> reporter: the career of general john allen hinges on the content of some 200 e-mails he exchanged with jill kelly. sources say allen was confronted with some of the e-mails by the chairman of the joint chiefs of staff martin dempsey. allen's attorney late today issued a statement saying general allen intends to fully cooperate with the inspector general investigators and directed his staff to do the same. allen has told officials he's done nothing wrong and has written nothing to kelly that would preclude his nomination. officials have characterized the communications with kelly as

brombshells in the general petraeus scandal. now general john allen is connected to jill kelley, details ahead. plus a late-night search by the fbi of paula broadwell's home in charlotte. all of this as we face wide-swinging weather patterns that seem to defy anything we've seen before. breaking new s overnight in the scandal that brought down general petraeus. now the man who oversaw general petraeus in the afghanistan war is under investigation himself. general john allen is accused of "inappropriate communications" with jill kelley, the florida woman whose complaints of e-mail harassment started the initial investigation. a senior defense official traveling with panetta says 20,000 to 30,000 pages of epail and other documents from general allen's communications with kelley are under review. the official says general allen disputes engaging in any wrong doing in the matter. the fbi referred the matter to the department of defense for investigation on sunday. early this morning secretary panetta directed that the defense department's inspector general investigate. last night fbi agents went t

.s. commander in afghanistan to the scandal. >> reporter: general john allen the top u.s. commander in afghanistan, is now linked to the scandal involving former cia director david petraeus. pentagon investigators are looking into e-mail communications between allen and tampa socialite jill kelley that some have characterized as flirtatious. kelley is the woman who went to the fbi with inspection threatening e-mails that agents traced to petraeus' alleged girlfriend paula broadwell. one senior defense official says the general allen investigation centers on about 20,000 pages of documents. another says allen and kelley only exchanged a few hundred e- mails over a number of years. and that the vast majority of them are completely innocuous. kelley's brother defended her character. >> i know who my sister is. and i know she's a good mother and a good wife. >> reporter: allen remains in command of 68,000 u.s. troops in afghanistan. he was supposed to be here on capitol hill this week for hearings on his nomination to be supreme u.s. commander in europe. now, that's on hold. >> the pres

john kerry's name as a candidate for secretary of defense. i couldn't help but read that above the article in the washington post, he didn't get the job for secretary of state and somebody is trying to throw some sort of bob. people like john kerry are completely incapable of helping the pentagon deal with this problem, even that problem. led of the on the problem that is going to occur. the other candidates for leadership of the pentagon to be it through this era, a very smart -- no background in any of these issues. the other candidates is ashton carter. he is perceived as a good manager. if you look at his job on the f 35 i simply cannot agree. he is not picking on the fundamental efforts of problem represents. he let it float to the future and it is going to face a phase in this, even in the sequestered scenario, it will do nothing but increase the cost on airplane which is a disappointment in terms of performance and that is a result of his management. i don't see him as a competent candidate to lead the pentagon through this future, thank you very much. >> thank you, wins
